Whale dies in Northland after stranding

A humpback whale has died this morning after becoming stranded near Dargaville in Northland.

Project Jonah general manager Darren Grover said the whale was about 10 metres long and several tonnes.

The Department of Conservation and fire trucks rushed to Glinks Gully, along with whale rescue group Project Jonah and locals.

He said it was unusual for a humpback to be that far north at this time of year, which might have meant it was distressed, unwell or disoriented.

Grover said it could have died from a number of reasons, including underlying health issues or old age.

He said there would be a blessing of the whale and the whale would likely be buried nearby or left on the beach.
